Inspired by the Soundings exhibition at Agnes, we will look at text-based art works by artists in the exhibition as well as related works by: Edgar Heap of Birds, Ogimaa Mikana, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Kara Springer, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, John Baldessari and Lawrence Weiner.During the first hour of the workshop, participants will create their own text-based works on paper using acrylics inspired by the works discussed above. The second half of the workshop will focus on performing these pieces.Sebastian De Line is a queer, trans artist and scholar of Haudenosaunee-Métis-Cantonese descent who was born in Burnaby, BC, on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil–Waututh nations. He/they hold a BFA in Autonomous Fine Art from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, an MA in Art Praxis from the Dutch Art Institute and is currently a PhD Candidate in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University (situated on traditional Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe territory). His/their work seeks a non-spectacular form of art that enables an intimacy with the spectator – encompassing drawing, painting, sculptural installation, and performative storytelling.Sunday 7 April , 1:30–3:30 pm Encaustic Artmaking with Julie Davidson SmithThis workshop introduces encaustic, teaching students how to paint with hot liquid beeswax, an ancient method of painting with a 3000 year old history. They will learn several techniques: layering wax, fusing the surface, adding collage and exploring various tools and materials to manipulate the wax.Julie Davidson Smith is an award-winning artist and facilitator with expertise in encaustic and acrylic painting, with over 20 years of experience exhibiting and teaching. Her workshops are inspiring, playful, empowering and rich with creative exploration and learning. She is passionate about making art and guiding others on their creative journey, helping them to grow, let go and take risks to actualize their creative potential.
