"Half gods, good Surgeons may be called"A Lecture by Samantha Sandassie, PhD Candidate, Queen’s UniversityEarly modern surgery was a risky business. How did medical practitioners labeled “butchers” convince the public that they were trustworthy? How did surgery gain the social standing it enjoys today? Using sources as diverse as guild records and prose fiction, Sandassie’s talk will explore the process of surgical professionalization over the course of 17th-century England as surgeons sought increased occupational and social credit. Refreshments will follow.Location: Museum of Health Care, Ann Baillie Building National Historic Site (32 George Street)Date: Wednesday, November 14, 2012Time: 7:00 p.m.Cost: FreeContact: (613) 548-2419 or info@museumofhealthcare.ca.
