Bagot Street North - Walk

Date
Sun, 05/03/2015 - 01:00

A Jane Jacob WalkThis stretch of Bagot is pretty sleepy these days, but the tour will look into its history as a lively area of small industry and commerce and home to sailors, waitresses, soldiers, laborers, stenographers, carpenters, shopkeepers, firemen, and plumbers. The focus will be on the 1920s to 1960s, a period that takes us from Kingston's industrial heyday to the closure of factories and the emergence of the suburbs. We'll touch on religion, immigration, gender roles, and the nature of work, and promise to awaken your imagination to the layers of lives lived before our own. This tour is the unofficial launch of SWIHHP, the Swamp Ward and Inner Harbour History Project, coordinated by Laura Murray at Queen's. We invite you to come hear about some of our initial research in the archives, and to make contact so we can learn from you or people you know about the history of this area. We will be doing interviews and other work this coming summer and are eager for community input!
